Determining the mental traits of elite/star athletes
Sports Psychology Center has created and developed scientifically-validated
tests to help determine the extent to which individuals possess the mental and
behavioral traits which differentiate elite/star athletes from other competitors, especially those with similar or somewhat superior physical skills.
We provide online assessments for professional teams and leagues, colleges,
Olympic organizations, sports academies and camps, sports psychologists,
organizations which market athletes, and individual athletes seeking information
to perfect their mental approaches.
Our first suite of psychological tests for athletes, developed in 2006, detailed
the mental characteristics usually found in elite athletes but not to the same
extent in other competitors. In 2008, Sports Psychology Center was chosen to
create the proprietary online assessment currently being used by Major League
Baseball and its 30 teams to assess the mental traits and behaviors of 1,500
high school and college players prior to MLB’s annual draft.
We are currently in the final stages of completing the next generation of
assessments for athletes. Our new suite of tests will be available in a minimum
of six languages---with each report/analysis containing scores/norms and
advice/recommendations for altering or sustaining specific mental approaches and
behaviors in sports, including: baseball and softball, football, soccer,
basketball, hockey, lacrosse, golf, swimming, tennis, track/cross country
Scores for each test-taker will be compared with those found in the areas which
differentiate elite/star athletes from other players/competitors in terms
of…work ethic/ambition/determination and commitment to
excel,…self-confidence…concentration/focus…coping with adversity and resiliency
(including the ability to bounce back after failure disappointment) and
emotional stability
Separate tests---with age-appropriate language and sport-specific
questions---will be available for:
Pre-teens (males and females 8-12 years of age)…a 15-minute test with
age-appropriate approaches and questions…providing an analysis of the
individual’s “interest” level in a sport/activity; his or her desired level of
fun, socialization, competition; commitment/ determination to excel and succeed;
confidence (especially in sports abilities); willingness/ability (and desire) to
handle stress and pressure (from competition, parents, friends)
High school students …a 20-25- minute test for male and female
athletes, with percentile comparisons for the five basic mental trait clusters
and several important sub-categories, including our mental speed test
Advanced…40-minute test for college, professional and adult
male/female competitors with scientifically-validated results/percentile scores
allowing comparisons with elite/star competitors for the five major traits and
20+ sub-category traits, a mental speed test and an “impression management”
score (to detect persons who have attempted to respond in a way that makes them
look better than they really are)
In addition, we are in the final stages of completing our College
Athletics and Classroom Attitude and Commitment Assessment, created to provide
coaches and athletic department personnel with a vehicle to help determine
athletes’ attitudes and motivations---to reveal athletes’ inclinations and
probable behavior concerning classroom and on-field activities…and to provide
information about the guidance and assistance needed by these athletes on a
case-by-case basis.
Our assessments, including immediate scoring/analysis/recommendations for
individual improvement, will be available online with Visa/MasterCard, at prices
ranging $9.95 to $19.95 (U.S. $$).
